Costa Rica Immigration

 

Easy explanation on Residency Options:

  •  Rentist Residency

This kind of temporary Costa Rica residency is based on receiving a specific monthly income in a permanent, stable and irrevocable manner. Presently, the required minimum amount with the new Costa Rica Immigration Law is:  US$2,500 monthly income for one applicant and with the same amount the applicant can extend the benefits of the Costa Rica Residency to the spouse and children.

OR via a deposit of  US$150,000 deposit in an approved Costa Rican or international bank.

Other important conditions include: 1. Upon approval of the Costa Rica Rentista residency, the resident may get involved in business activities but cannot be hired as an employee. 2. The income may come from a local or foreign bank. 3. After the grant of the Costa Rica residency, the beneficiary must live in the Costa Rica for at least four months per year (consecutive or staggered) in order to maintain the Costa Rica residency status.

  • Pensioner Residency

This kind of temporary Costa Rica residency is based on receiving a monthly life pension of not less than US$1000.

Other important conditions include:1. Upon approval of the Costa Rica residency as Pensioner, the resident may get involved in business activities but cannot be hired as an employee.2. The income must originate from an eligible source, such as a retirement plan company, social security or the government.3. If the source of pension is a company or NGO, it must be a corporate entity incorporated at least twenty years prior to the date of application of the residency.4. The pension must be for life, coming from abroad and belonging to the applicant to the residency personally.5. After the grant of the Pensioner residency, the resident must live in the country for at least four months per year (consecutive or staggered) in order to maintain the Costa Rican residency status.

It is very important to note that with the new Costa Rican Immigration Law this requirement has been modified recently by the Director of Costa Rican Immigration in such a way that it now allows for Costa Rican residency applicants to base their residency not only in an investment project but also thru demonstrating proprietorship of Costa Rican real estate, shares, valuables, productive projects or projects of national interest. However for the renewal of the Costa Rican Investor Residency such investment has to be properly registered in the local tax office.
